Number of Days Prior to Election Day that Voter Registration Opportunity Closes
Registration deadlines vary from 30 days prior to an election to Election Day itself. The highest turnout and registration rates are found in states that have shortened their deadlines. North Dakota has no voter registration and seven other states allow voters to register on the day of election, subject to various restrictions.
This statistic measures how many days before Election Day voter registration closes in each state. Although North Dakota does not have voter registration, it is treated as if its registration closes on Election Day for the purpose of this assessment. These data are available at the Pew Center on the State's project electionline.org at http://www.pewcenteronthestates.org/template_page.aspx?id=42368. Dr. Michael McDonald, Associate Professor of Government and Politics at George Mason University, provided consulting support on developing and analyzing these data.
