Fortunately, the South Carolina Sentencing Reform Commission is leading the way to do just that. The commission thoroughly studied the characteristics of offenders and the patterns of new crimes committed by those who are released. With the help of the Pew Center on the States, the commission looked at what other states are doing to reduce crime and save money on corrections. And it examined the research to find which policies are the most effective at reducing crime.
